SONG OF THE DAY FOR OCTOBER 14, 2011: MASTER OF PUPPETS BY METALLICA

I went to high school and worked with some heavy metal burnouts. Some were dimwitted, some were high, and some were a combination of the two. I owe them some thanks for turning me on to some great heavy metal music.

One guy, Rusty Carlisle (that's not his real name, I am protecting the innocent), would always have this vacant look on his face at work. Out of nowhere, he would start playing air guitar and would make distorted guitar sounds with his mouth. It was always the same "CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG" riff. Rusty would look my way and say, "Hey, Tony, have you heard the new Yngwie Malmsteen album?" I'd reply, "no", so Rusty would crank out the CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG riff as an example of one of his songs. That riff was THE example of every song. Thank god we did not work at a music store together. Customer: "Sir, what can you tell me about the new Yanni album?" Rusty: "Pretty awesome! He's got this one song that goes CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG!"

It was Rusty who told me to check out Metallica's Master of Puppets because he knew I loved bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC. I took his advice and found the album to be one of the best metal albums of all time. Thanks, Rusty.

I'm sure you'll love today's selection. It has a sweet riff that goes CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG.

  1. Tony, I had a similar friend that went about it the same and intro'd me to Master as well as the whole Metallica back catalogue. I'd say that friend was just as instrumental (no pun meant) as another friend was to exposing me to classic punk.
