The Pixies were an excellent American band and their catalog is near perfect. I am not the easiest music fan to win over, but songs like 'Debaser' are proof why The Pixies are still one of the best bands ever. In this age of god-awful indie "rock" acts playing the sensitive and emotionally hip garbage, this is a reminder that at one time bands knew what a distortion pedal was and had no fear of screaming angst ridden lyrics. Is anyone listening? Fleet Foxes? Arcade Fire? Anyone?
I was introduced to the band, circa 1993, by a good friend from high school. I'm pretty certain he was annoyed by my love of 70s classic rock acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Aerosmith, and Grand Funk Railroad. He brought over some tapes of various bands and one of the first tapes he played for me was Doolittle by The Pixies. I don't know what caught me first, but there was an energy that came out of the speakers that immediately caught my attention. The classic rock listening was placed on hold after being introduced to The Pixies. I'm still a fan to this very day.
I have noticed that during the past decade the band's popularity has skyrocketed due to the use of 'Where is My Mind' at the end of Fight Club and from the infamous YouTube fan video of 'Hey'. When The Pixies were together during the 80s and early 90s, they were largely ignored by American music listeners, but they did inspire many musicians like Kurt Cobain.
Enjoy!
